universal joint failure

Postby ger » Tue, 24 Jul 2012 12:20 +0000

Anyone had a UV Joint on the the drive shaft go?
I'm getting a squealing on engine braking and load and reverse, clicks sometimes also on acceleration, which has a similar sound to detonation but is definitely from the rear.

no bad diff whine, half shafts seem good and boots intact, no brake problems or rear wheel bearing issues.

Yeah, kinda, I had a definite "squeak" at a particular point in the rotation of the shaft, my mechanic diagnosed it as a drying out of a particular part of the UV ( he did use some term which escapes me now), only solution was to replace the UV or the whole shaft as a single unit..I'll bet that Robert in swords will have shafts..do you have contact for him??

We could swap mine onto yours as a means to determine if that's all the problem is??

Thanks john, It seems like the the uv joint to me, but as i am recovering from a broken rib pulling the shaft to check would be quite painful, also on the idea of swapping over the shafts i appreciate it but it would cost too much in gear oil unless there is a way to stop the gearbox oil spewing out once the shaft is removed.

Hmm, there must be because as far as I know there was no spillage from the gearbox when mine was swapped over. I assume the seal is independent from the splined shaft??

The spine goes through the seal. If everything is level you'll get some oil leaking when you take the shaft out.
On this one my drive shaft is out at the moment. I was moving the universal joints around and there's a slight click on the diff end when you move it around.
Do you think this is in trouble or on the way out?
