You might be able to avoid taking out the engine to tap it if you take out the rad first, though you'll need to be very careful to get it straight.
If it was me, I'd remove the bolt, fit a new belt, attempt to retap the crank and fit a new bolt + woodruff key (at least).
If the tap is unsuccessful, I'd explore having a helicoil fitted. I had one fitted to a pushrod rocker post in a Jeep a couple of years ago, it never budged after that.
Worse case scenario, engines are reasonably cheap now.

Thanks Steve.

When you say engines are relatively cheap, do you mean reconditioned engines or 'take-your-chances' scrapyard engines? Any links to sites that sell them or names of irish companies?

Rds.

WOO WOO WOO everything down here, what 'exactly' has that Monkey Nut done to your engines block ?
There is NO 'key' issue with a 2,000 Mx5 so what has that BUTCHER 'welded' ? Even with a 'key issue' there is NOTHING THAT CAN BE WELDED.

Main Crank Seal - 5 Euro !!

I dont think rethreading the crankshaft is an option really.Dont even go down the route of new crankshaft unless you won the lotto lately !!!.Secondhand engine is cheaper from us 350E !!! And I have some still in cars so you can check them.

What part of Cork?

and is it Sat or Sunday?

I cant get a picture now but my understanding is he welded the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft bolt because he couldn't tighten it or loosen it without forcing it. If he forced it out he was afraid he wouldn't be able to put it back on. All of this is down to the bolt either being over/under torqued when the timing belt was done....

He is known as a good mechanic, 7/8 staff, high street premises and recommended by two different people in the motor trade....

Sorry to say lad but he has ruined your crank and pulley and has cost you a lot of money for a "quick fix" to get you out the door.
If he couldn't tighten or loosen it he should have left it alone, informed you and refered you to a machine shop or someone with the tools to finish the job.

I'm back in business. Back to my original mechanic, he forced the crankshaft bolt and it turned, out the bastard came.

A few new parts were needed and it's as good as new, slipping beautifully around corners and flying up through the gears. Fuel gauge has nearly stopped moving....

Sadly my MX5 driving days are numbered though, family commitments mean we need two cars with back seats from next september so I will with a heavy heart be trying to sell her next spring. It's a limited edition so anyone care to suggest what I could ask for her?

78,000k miles, NI import, new cat, rad and leads. Hardtop, heated glass in softtop, LSD, Guy I bought it from thought only Icon's two were sold in Ireland. NCT Apr/13.

What are the main websites for private sales in Ireland these days? Haven't bought or sold a car since 2007.

Used engine for 350e from us.Rethreading the crankshaft not an option I think.Too messy and dangerous if pulley comes off again etc plus you need to rethread at a larger size and the woodruff key is also in there so messy enough.Rovere 400 and Civic ( these has left hand thread and engine turned right hand ??? so basically pulley would come loose if not tightened properly)?? gave the same trouble years ago and used engine was the only real solution. Also Owen welded what ?? as welding the bolt to the pulley is doing nothing as bolt is loose anyway ( need to weld pulley to crank to really work but this is not possible and not recomended at all !!!)
