Insurance

Postby jasonj » Sun, 02 Dec 2012 10:47 +0000

Hi everyone ,
i was just wondering if anyone wanted to give me some help on insurance costs
im 18 on a full and want to buy a mk1 1.6
insurance companies want to charge me thousands even under my parents
the one im looking at atm is a 1991 so it qualfies for some classic insurance companies
but would they let me go as a named driver
or does anyone know where its cheaper to get insured with?

any classic policy I've looked at, you must have your own private car policy and be over 25. This goes for named drivers as well as the main driver so I don't think that will work for you.

I'm not sure if there is any way around it, your age is massively against you as is your lack of no claims. You could see if aviva still do that ignition course? I did that at your age and it knocked 20/30% off. There are other things that help a little. If you read through a policy carefully, there are often extras tagged on which all add up. It's not always advisable, but when the insurance is costing more than the car it doesn't really make sense to have any added protection.

Good luck with it, but I reckon something a bit newer with a smaller engine might be the way to go for a year or so until you get a bit of experience behind you so it isn't so expensive. Full license would also help if you haven't already got it.

Have you tried xsdirect.ie

They specialise in you drivers, give a reasonable policy in return for you paying a high excess on a claim.

To be fair your 18, you might just have to suck it up and get something smaller for a while. Mx5's are fairly cheap to insure in general so if your having problems with one your better getting something newer and smaller engine to build up your ncb.

I must admit I was fairly happy with my 3rd party quote on 1.8 roadster @ €280 with aviva :-) (sorry didnt mean to rub it in)

The excess is over 3000 with these lads but they are good for a quote.. quoted me 1350 a year for the S2k where Aviva are taking 3000 a year  (3 years no claims) Give them a try..

Insured my NA 1.6 with 123 reasonably as a 20yo, full license, 0 NCB. Was insured on another car for a couple of years under my parents and they took the number of claim free years driving that into account which is pretty good. Will be shopping round come renewal time but defo worth a try anyway.

Yeah it totally sucks and we've all been there at some stage :(

BUT... look at it this way, you DO have something to look forward to so it's not that bad :)
Plus once you get your Mx5 your probably going to want to go Turbo/Supercharger so you have plenty of time to get one, work on it, work on it more, work on it even more. Then you'll have a bad ass car that leaves everything behind it :)

Keep your head up lad, do your few years of time to get your NCT up and you'll be sorted (and you'll have one bad ass car to drive then  ).

if you want to go through liberty they give out 3rd party extension to everyone so you could tax and test your mx5 and just get insured on something else reasonable so you have a policy so you can then drive the mazda all you want but it will only be 3rd party
