thankfully no! I know a few who are though.
I agree with the principals of it - ie learners really shouldn't be on the road at all without some basic level of training, but this is a typical approach to any problem - the quick fix.
The bulk of young learner drivers do want to sit and pass their test so it's not their fault - yet they are bearing the brunt of the new laws. Driver training should be included in the secondary syllabus - it shouldn't be voluntary. There's so many drivers who've passed the test first time out who still don't know the first thing about dual carriageway driving, major roundabouts or have any concept of appropriate speed, braking distance or even how to reverse park. Or forward park for that matter.
But training people how to drive would cost time and money to organise so we'll have to wait until they've fined us all another few million quid for minor infringements and paid off Gay Byrne into his 12th retirement before that happens

Una will be as she is on the second provisional. Applied for the test in feb and no test till 21st july. What is she supposed to do not go t owork in the morning. I also agree in principle, it works in the uk, no one drives on a prov and those who do will be caught. But its always been that way so everyone goes out and gets there test (which they are able to do) and become safer drivers for it.
In the uk you can apply for a 1 week intensive course where you go for driver training for 4 days and take your test on the 5th day. If the govenment had got something like that set up over here to clear the backlog then they would be sorted by now and they could introduce the "new law".

Does anyone know if there is a requirment to tell the test centre that the test will be carried out in an automatic car prior to the test. Cant see that there will be a need but just wondering as they have not asked.

I think it's about time that this is introduced. A family member over here (no names) has been driving on provisional as she keeps failing. Her car truly has more hits than the BeeGees (I'll take a photo of the car on the first opportunity and show ya'll for a giggle of amazement). I am of the opinion that it's outrageous that people proven to be unqualified/unsafe during a test, can still drive away in their car and swing it in front of qualified drivers. 2 years ago I was knocked off my motor bike by and L driver who joined the main road without looking (I have 3 big headlights and a fluorescent strap around me). She drove on whilst a lot of people stopped to check me out (Probably the good looks 8) until I took my helmet off and they ran back to their cars :( ) She didn't realise what had happened as she was too busy chatting on the phone.
With a gun you can only kill one person at a time and try to get a license; with a car you can cause carnage and don't even need any prove you are the slightest bit capable of driving it. After all those deaths on our roads it's ridiculous that it took so long before the point was taken.
In any other EU country you only drive with a qualified driving instructor until you pass. The instructors themselves have to sit an exam every 1/2 year to keep their license active.

Anyway, better out than in.. right?

I totally agree with you on the fact that that is how it should be and how it should have been from the start.
But the fact is that it isn't and hasn't been enforced and then to turn round and say no more driving tomorrow (or 6 months after they backed down the first time) without giving people the ability to remove themselves from the situation is utter bollocks. There must be 1000's of drivers who have applied for the test and despite what they say about getting your date within 2 weeks, have not been given the chance to prove that they are able to drive or not.
Also there is feck all in the way off public transport outside of dublin/cities.
I would also say that yes learner drivers can be a danger but so are older people especially those that were just given there licence all those years ago the last time the government couldn't get the act together and test people.
So i agree with what they are doing but not how they are doing it.

And the point has just been made that L drivers are allowed to drive a tractor with a 2000kg load. WTF!!!

Sean,

That would also have the added benefit of reducing waiting times for a retest.....as well as making those sitting the driving test ensure they are ready - good thinking!

I was amazed when I moved here to be told that people can drive without a "licence"......not only that, but they can actually fail the test - and therefore are incompetent to drive - to be told "off ye go" and drive away from the test centre....and all completely legal. Remarkable.

Well i think it's mental that you do your test and thats it
for the rest of your life. I think you should do it every 5 years.

When my Dad got his licence there was no motorways in the country
and the rules of the road where an A4 page.
