Well done, hopefully you'll get the weather to use it now.

Well done Graham, persistence pays off in the end...You should add redex , dipetane , or similar to your fuel on a regular basis now , just to keep the system clear..

Thanks John - it5 was such a relief getting it thru, especially as I had spent a small fortune putting on new front springs, new track rod ends, and new upper and lower ball joints on the wishbone... not to mention flushing the cooling system and general service.

And yes - since passing I have been adding Redex at each fill.

Graham.

Had mine in for the NCT last night, failed on the handbrake “it’s as good as not working on the drivers side” was his comment.

Due to some health problems it’s done just over 1000 kilometers since it’s last test, the brakes were not tested on the rollers last time, was told it’s because the car has a lsd so couldn’t be done but this time they were tested on the rollers so failed, I suppose if it were tested the same way in the last test the problem might have been there then.
Truth be told, I did find out about the handbrake when I put it away in September but unfortunately forgot to fix it , memory fails sometimes

Found the old nct test sheets ,2017 no brake test but 2016 the brakes were tested, how did they go from being as good as perfect to a failure in only 3k klm

Notice the advisory on the age of the Tyres on the 2017 cert isn’t an issue yesterday even though they haven’t been changed

Maybe you'll have to ease back on those handbrake turns....

Hopefully it's an easy enough fix for you.

It’s back in the shed, I have until early January to get the retest. Hopefully it’s something simple, I did rebuild all the calipers and fitted new pads, discs all round and new cables when I got it in2016 so should be only some adjustments needed, what does the ovality mean, 96% on the rear 56% on front, think that’s a fail as well even though the tester didn’t mention it

their definition is "Ovality is the proportion of the minimum and maximum brake force on one full wheel rotation at a brake force of 25%". Essentially... its acting like a warped disk. I've read somewhere before that giving the disks a rub with emery paper will remove the pad material buildup on the disk, which is most likely the issue.

Don’t know why the brake testing isn’t consistent, 2 years ago the rollers were used, last test rollers were not used because the car has a LSD, now for this test the rollers were used, same car same LSD.
Advisory as well now about a slight weep from the steering rack even though it’s got new gaiters but no advisory about the age of the front tyres which I was given last time .
Anyway, it gives me something to do next week if I can shift my lazy ass from the warmth and comfort of the house to the cold shed.

I think its more the testers aren't consistent, I usually point out the car has an LSD and ask them to not use the rollers.

Section 21 note 8
The use of a roller brake tester is not appropriate on hybrid vehicles or on vehicles with a permanently
engaged four wheel drive, limited slip differential or belt driven transmission

Had another look at the fail sheet, the car is listed as a Mazda Other, most likely the tester doesn’t know much about mx5’s

After readjustment of the caliper and the cable got it retested, passed ok so good now till 2020 even though it’ll spend the next few months in the shed

Well done - and always a nice feeling. And I'm sure you'd love to go for a spin in it. Can't believe the weather is still good enough (generally) to take the 5 out.

I'm thinking of putting mine thru the test soon - just to get it out of the way (tho if I put it thru early, and it fails, it will really miss me off).

Yes mrges, isn’t a bad idea to get it tested early, for me , if I’d left mine any later then I’d be under pressure to get it fixed in time. Thankfully mine was an easy enough fix , I suppose the rollers were used again because they were used to find the fault.
