selling the mk2 MX5 RS

Postby dabofoppo » Wed, 26 Jan 2011 9:20 +0000

The mk2 MX5 RS was definitely a step up in comfort and quiteness compared to the GTM, but now that I'm 30, I've decided to go one step further towards comfort, and am in the process of buying a bigger (heavier :'( ), more comfortable car. The MX5 has served me well, and it has definitely been my favourite car from all the ones I've owned to date. I test drove quite a few MX5s, but gave up after seeing too many rough or modified examples and went out and bought the octane alfa 156 shed to tide me over while looking for the next car. Then out of the blue, JPW gave me a call to say that his neighbour was selling a minty mk2, and the rest is history.

Here's what the RS model gives you:
  • ABS
  • 6 speed gearbox (it is a fantastic box, sweet short shift movement)
  • Torsen LSD
  • Bilstein suspension
  • Leather wrapped Nardi steering wheel and gearknob
  • Polished sill plates
  • 9.5:1 compression giving 145hp (instead of 140)
  • Aircon
  • PAS
  • Electric windows
  • Factory windblocker
  • Electric aerial
  • Engine bay brace bar

The previous owner personally imported it from Japan. She owned it for 5 years, and nearly cried when parting with it. There are a few extras on it that were factory upgrades - Mazda Side skirts and Front splitter, and a chrome grille to prevent stones damaging the radiator. It is 98% stock, with only 2 minor modifications - the wheels are not standard (but they are 15" and the correct offset, so it rides perfectly), and I took out the BOSE stereo upon buying the car. The BOSE head unit is paired to specific BOSE speakers in the doors, and to my great surprise, the sound is terrible. I will be including my beloved Pioneer head unit (DEH-P77MP) that I've owned for years, and I also upgraded the door speakers, so the sound is dramatically improved.

here's the basics:
  • NCT - end Oct 2012
  • Tax - end July 2011
  • Mileage - 96K kilometres (60K miles)

The body is in outstanding condition, there is just no way you'd look at the paintwork and think it was 13 years old. No dents, and very very little scratches. The wheels look nice, but are showing their age, but no curbing (kerbing?). The soft top has a heated glass screen, and has no rips or tears. Everything works exactly as it should, but this is not unusual for an MX5. There is a Mazda factory hard top with heated rear screen included with the sale. The previous owner described how she drove the car to the UK to pick up the hard top for €2000, and installed it and drove home. I'll have no problem selling the hard top separately, as demand is very high for these, so I have decided to advertise the car with 2 prices; with hard top and without. Based on mileage, spec and condition, I think they are fair prices, but as always I'd like your feedback on this.

  • With hard top - €4900
  • Without hard top - €4500
