How do I repair my broken Ignition?

Postby IRISHDAN » Wed, 04 Feb 2009 2:08 +0000

As some of you may know my MX5 was stolen last weekend and i'm in the process of getting it back together. I'll need to order a full lock set as they broke the locks on the doors, boot and ignition but I want to ask if anyone knows what other parts I might need for the ignition system.

I currently can start the car with a screwdriver, it sits nicely into where the barrell for the ignition used to be! The little scumbags who stole the car didnt need to hotwire it so i'm wondering if I need a new ignition switch or will the lock set be enough?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a mk1 ?

Full lock set: http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/917

Before you go replacing all the locks, make sure you can stick an alarm into it right away afterwards :thumright:

By The Way.....

If you don't want to spend all that hard earned money on a complete lock set just go off and get a good alarm with CENTRAL LOCKING, then you can get different locks for the doors in a breakers etc.

One key for the new ignition - http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/921

The boot can be opened from inside the car (if you have that button in the box behind the gearstick....also available to buy on Mx5Parts - http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/135) and the doors can be opened remotely - BEEP BEEP etc !

Saves a nice bit of cash for something else.....or just put it towards the cost of the alarm

Dont waste your time money on scrap yard only an mx5 barrel properly fits the rear switch i have seen lots nasty mods on stolen recovered cars i have broken, that have let unsuspecting owners down at 2/3 am in the morning its either new ignition from Mazda or used full set i have even seen a Lucas Hymac key arrive in on a car from Japan that worked for a couple of weeks< P

I was thinking of just removing the rear boot lock altogether and have the release switch inside the car. That's what I and a few others have done anyways.

I am going to go with the full lock set from MX5 Parts but i'm wondering if I will need any other parts?

Has anyone had to replace the ignition barrell after a theft?

Are there likely to be any other parts needed?

Isn't the ignition barrell part of the full lock set ?
