top 10 improvements to a standard mk1

Postby mark » Sat, 07 Nov 2009 5:48 +0000

hi lads and lasses , with all the new newbies and all the unsure members ( myself included ) what do the more experienced lads and lasses believe are the top 10 improvements for the money possible to a standard mx5

so far i've gone down a traditional route of full service, fitted new plugs and improved magnecore electrosport 80 leads and a k&n air filter

many thanks

Usual suspects of mods would include:wheels/tyres/suspension/I.C.E./Turbo/foglights/bling/hardtop etc.,
Anyone else wish to add to the list??

John

P.S. Forgot the playstation...eh,PJ??

I would say definitely for a MK1 is a total suspension overhaul especially the bushes.I replaced mine with polybushes and a proper suspenion set up its like a new car, its just a shame we have such shitty roads in the poxy country on smooth twisty roads its unreal.
You will start off spending feck all the next thing you know you have pumped in thousands its a really expensive hobby once you start the spending.

.......Yes definitely would recommend the KYB adjustable shocks all round they make a HUGE difference over the standard setup....

Also a good stereo...hardtop for the winter months....good choice of rubber....and thats just for starters.... :cyclops:

14 degree timing - free
NGK Long reach plugs - 20 euro
Decat - 50 euro ish
decent manifold and cat back system.
Cold air setup or heat shield for you k&n
Kyb AGX shocks
Stiffer springs, dont go too low its a headache
good 4 wheel alignment (lanny settings) 50 euro
Toyo T1r's 300 euro
Turbo or supercharger

Dont forget to put decent oil in the engine, gearbox and diff.
The diff oil has probably never been changed, I use silkolene, redline is good too, and magnatec in the engine.

1. Proper alarm; anyone that doesn't have one is fooling themselves, the early MX5s can be hotwired with 2 paperclips.
2. oil change, fuel/oil/air filter change, new plugs and leads
3. Good tyres - Toyo Proxes
4. JR Cold Air Intake (proper induction box, not one of the U-bend versions)
5. JR 4-2-1 ceramic exhaust manifold/downpipe. Spine-tingling noise when partnered with the JR-CAI
6. Powerflex Polybushes
7. Momo steering wheel and Voodoo knob combo
8. KYB AGX adjustable shocks
9. Headrest speakers (any, they all help)
10. Flyin' Miata FMII turbo, good smooth power out of the box
It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world

mmmm headrest speakers for the mk1. That's what I need. Someone told me there are two small speakers in each headrest, and Mazda are looking for €95 for each one! Anybody tell me what exactly I'm looking for, and how I can do it cheaper that that?
Climbed Elbrus, Island Peak, Kilimanjaro, Elgon, Everest BC, Mulhacen, Elgon, Kayaked the Liffey to the Nile, swam the Liffey, the Lee & packed ten triathlons into a year... catch me blogging on: http://www.teenagates.com

unzip the headrest cover to see the speakers.
4inch speakers will fit after trimming some foam.
