Classic cars. I remember as a small kid being stuck in the boot of one of these with the parcel shelf removed. Lots of memories here

My sister had one. early 70's. I clearly remember having to bail out of it once when it caught fire, the battery was located under the rear seat, if you had too much weight in the back seat the springs would short-out the terminals, the seat was stuffed with straw-like stuff...voila..instant inferno

If you had have asked me just over a year ago I would have said "BUG!" But my 5 is growing on me all the time... An attic full of Volks World might say different but stopped collecting them years ago, and there is a longing from time to time... But I get over it!

never forget on a trip to Central American I couldn't believe how many of them there were .. all over the shop. It was very strange

I think they are exported to the US from there?

Yeah, they were making them in Mexico up until recently - hence the term 'Mexi' when it comes to Beetles. Think they had a four-door version too !

Best thing was, they was also still making the bay-window bus/van/pickup !

Yeah, altho' mine was exported to Germany and sold new via a supermarket chain "lotto" in 1995. Still the same dub dub LHD, Fuel injected, airbag, immobiliser and catalytic converter..

Saw new buses for sale 2 years ago in Brazil, not as cheap as I was expecting though.

There is a gap behind the rear seats for sure.
Some cars may have had them covered up for speakers, but the gap was definitely there.
