What did you do to your MX5 today ?

Postby Cloggy » Fri, 01 Apr 2011 9:31 +0000

Got my CB Radio off Wayne and gave it a test run.
Threw some new jargon at the truckers in Louth. Was in stitches as it completely messed them up :)

Frame rails fitted.
Instal went OK. spent more time waxoiling and undersealing the section than actually fitting.

Only problem now is that I am not happy with the brake and fuel lines. None of the suggestions in the various write-ups seem to work for me.

Flattening the bracket, reversing it and bolting to the floor - afraid to bend the lines that much.

The bolt length I used is only just long enough to cover the nut so the problem is not that the bolts are too long.

Routing "diagonally" with the brackets drilled into the new frame rail - didnt want to try drilling the new rail in-situ and not happy the bracket or bolt would be below the level of the rail and could snag.

Did not fit the rear inner bolt to the new rail because it would rub against the lines.

Has anyone here successfully fitted the rails and come up with an acceptable solution for the brake and fuel lines?

Would be interested in finding out what you did.

From the way mine look right now, the solution would seem to be to find a way to hold the lines secure but lowered slightly from the floor so they do not vibrate/rub against the new bolts/nuts. I have a temporary bodge in place to do this. I am thinking that I will have to make up 2 suitable brackets for fixing to the floor which will hold the lines securely and without any possibility of rubbing against the new rail and nuts/bolts.

Any ideas? Will try to post pics in the next day or two.

New door seal fitted to solve damp trim issues. Okay, not an MX5 but as close as one would be if it had four seats. It's a £500 job, but I saved £260 by doing it myself.

Fitted new wind blocker - 5 mins
Cleaned the car - 5 hours
Started with a quick wash, then saw all the tar on it from recent road resurfacing. Broke out the holts tar remover and gave it a good coat, then re washed to make sure all the holts was off (when you've seen what it does to tar you don't feel great leaving it on your paint) the it needed a polish to get the shine back so used meguires crystal polish, after that the harly wax came out to protect the finish.
The decided that the wheels were letting it down so gave them a good clean with wonder wheels (great stuff really cuts through the brake dust that other products wouldn't touch), windows all done and a quick polish of the chrome/metal with megs nxt metal polish and some back to black on the front lip and tyres and it's looking great again.

Yesterday, I removed the red hard top from my bronze mk2 and brought it to Ivan to get a new look..Carbonfibre Wrap!! Will post pics upon it's return.

Today, fired her up (with a jump start) on the first turn of the key and brought it out to a mates place to finally tackle the underbody and suspension issues..hope to be roadworthy and legal in the very near future!!

It's amazing how we get so much more productive when the sun's shining

Sanded all the yellow paint of the strut brace and polished it up, painted the brackets for it aswell along with the dipstick handle so that got rid of all the yellow!

Next step is to paint the rocker cover
