Delayed/Hesitant acceleration around 60/70mph

Postby Villeneuve 27 » Tue, 02 Aug 2011 12:03 +0000

Hi, my MkII is starting to have an intermittant problem with acceleration. It tends to start above 60mph when I ease off the accelerator and then back on throttle the car starts to hesitate and jerks a little. Eventually after a second or two, accelaration picks up, and I have completed two long runs recently with the problem. It's odd because other than this the car is accelerating and revving fine. The problem only seems to develop on the motorway above 60mph.

The issue has cleared up temporarily on those long runs by stopping and getting a top up with petrol but I know there is more to it than that, and don't want to risk doing any further damage.

I'm guessing it could be linked to fuel starvation, and maybe it needs a new fuel filter.

Appreciate any views, thanks folks

If it were any other car, I'd say it might be a problem with the EGR valve.

However since it's a '5, I would look at the sparkplus.

Does your engine have coilpacks at the back of the engine ? If so, it might be time to change the ignition leads.
Or if it has coil-on-plugs then it could simply be a sparkplug failing.

Fuelling problems tend to show up either at hight rpm or very low rpm, which is why I am thinking it's ignition related
It's a small world after all. It's a small, small world

Thanks for the swift response, great to have such a knowledgable crew to ask. When you're doing 75 on the motorway and she just starts jerking on you, you fear the worst.

I'll get this checked out, doesn't sound too expensive. Around Dublin (preferably North County) any sugestions on mechanics who could have a look at this/any MX5 problem?

I'm a spanner. With a spanner.
