Postby connemara » Thu, 09 Feb 2012 11:31 +0000

Hi my fan belt has snapped twice and mechanic thinks its the alternator, has anyone had this sort of problem, could it be something else or does that sound about right, it makes a high pitched noise in morning since second fan belt fitted

its a 1997 mx5 1.8

I had that problem on a previous mx5, turned out that corrosion on the alternator pulley was the cause...remove the alternator and get it to any auto electric shop who should be able to fit a replacement pulley, or be able to get one for ya.

Check that you dont have a coolant leak from the t-piece on the stat housing. It can drip after a hot shut down right onto the belt and make the fecker squeal goodooo.
