Supercharged MX5 and NCT

Postby andrew » Tue, 22 Jan 2013 12:11 +0000

I've had my car supercharged and running a megasquirt with 550cc injectors for nearly a year now and its been great on track and on the road. I had been a bit worried about the NCT as the idle speed was inconsistant and when it drops below 800rpm it ran a bit rich (13.0 - 14.5) anything above that and it was nice and steady around 14.7 +-0.3. Funnily enough I got a steadier reading by disabling EGO correction and just using the fuel table.

So, into the test center this morning with the laptop in the car, I asked the receptionist if I could watch the idle test (car is 93, no cat) and adjust if necessary. I was fully expecting a Health and Safety answer, but suprisingly she said 'no problem they are just going to bring it in now' I told the tester about the ECU and he said 'what is it a 93? sure there will be no problem'. I watched the AFR while he was testing it and the wideband read 15 ish. 'Yeah', he said 'no problem'. Relieved I went to watch the rest of the test upstairs, half expecting it to fail on something else (e.g. quick release steering wheel) as I hadn't checked anything else beside fluid levels.

20 mins later, a fresh NCT cert was issued. Happy days !!

Well, I didn't sit in the car with the laptop. I just had it there in case I needed it.

The lad testing it was very accomadating, he wouldn't have minded if I did.

Nice to hear it passed. Just out of interest, which centre was this? Always good to know about friendly testers/centres

Test time again today.

I did the same as last time and asked could I talk to the tester. When I went out he had called over his friend to look at it. I had the laptop on the passenger seat connected to the ECU and he was looking at it.
I told him I could adjust the fuel if required. No problem, "should be grand" he said looking at the AFR gauge. Passed the emissions no problem. Anyway, it passed again. It hasn't failed since 99 so fingers crossed for future. Pre 93's are much easier than post 93 too.
