What engine is in the mark 2 rs?

Postby fugs » Sun, 17 Aug 2014 3:28 +0000

I have a mark 2 rs which is more powerfull than a mark 2 1.8 sport. But it's the same power as a mark 2.5 sport, so is the engine in the mark 2 rs the very same as a mark 2.5 sport? I need to get this right as some parts differ? Thanks.

Also does the mark 2 rs have the bigger brakes?

Thanks

mk2.5 1.8 are VVT (variable valve timing) which gives better power in mid/higher revs .mk2 is non vvt but similar otherwise at 140bhp approx although the vvt is rated as 168bhp.Totally different in some only parts so you need to clarify which one you have but if its 98 its non vvt.

But is the mark 2 rs the same engine as the mark 2.5 sport? They are both rated at the same power. I need to figure this out to get the right tb kit??

same as other 1.8 mk2 engines as far as I know. Its the ecu in the RS that gives higher rev limit and power so you just need a mk2 1.8 timing belt i think.

RS Engine is the most powerful despite the claims for the vvt(vvt has a better mid range torque spread ) Think its BP05 code and is in the RS and the 10ae models. RS has the best flowing head also.
RS does not have bigger brakes. Only sport models.
The perfection of a Car's beauty is that nothing should be there for beauty's sake.

as i understand it the mk2 rs has the bp5a engine (different inlet cam) lighter flywheel and higher rev limit 7500 rpm
but the same max power 140 ponies .
the rad ,airbox, heatshield and head should have bp5a stamped on them unless some parts have been changed .the inlet cam also has it marked,i think .
but im not an expert!!!!!
is there any mention of the engine on the door sticker? and it should have standard brakes.
hope this helps

mk2 rs are 145bhp - bp05 engines with a bp5a intake cam - the rs is 5hp more than a 99ae or uk sport which is 140bhp due to the better cam

mk2.5 rs are quoted as 160ps so not sure what that equates to in bhp terms but the vvt engine is a bit more powerful than the mk2 rs

a mk2 has standard 1.8 brakes , only the mk2.5 sports and some ltd editions have the big brakes 251mm/271mm rears.
