Goodbye Mk1, hello Mk3

Postby Reesy » Sat, 13 May 2017 5:04 +0000

Hi all,

In 2002 I bought a Mk1 MX5 and it changed my whole view of cars & driving :D I've had 15 years of great fun (dropped a Jackson Racing cold air intake into it - made it perform lots better) & it's served me really well (pic below is from her glory days).

However a fortnight ago the head gasket went and I had to get it towed home. As it happens I was looking at a Mk3, so I went ahead and bought the Mk3. The Mk3 isn't anywhere near as much fun as my Mk1 but it's growing on me.

Anyway, the Mk1's for sale - I'm about to list it in the 'for sale' section, along with all the extra Mk1 bits. It'll go up on Donedeal but first dibs for the owners club.

No more Mk1, now driving an '08 Mk3. Still fun!

Thanks! It looked great a few years ago - is rather pink now.

Posted it on the FB page. Had tons of interest so it looks like I'll get the asking price. Wish I'd asked for more!

Pity about the HG failure, did the car sell since?
Any pics of the mk3?

Here you go Steve.

Early impressions: The Mk3 feels higher, heavier, more powerful, safer (airbags, ABS, feels more solid) but less grunt at the low end than with my Mk1 (especially after I dropped the JRCAI in the Mk1). More comfortable at higher speeds & for long journeys. Overall less fun but some of the trade-offs are positive, so I'm happy enough until I trade it in for a mk4 (someday).

I much prefer the look of the Mk1 inside and out, but I think that may be partly because I had fun in the Mk1 for nigh on 15 years (and obviously, partly because the Mk1 is undeniably better looking!).

EDIT: for some reason the aspect ratio has been altered in the uploaded version of the pic!

Good to hear you are having fun in the MK3. I had one before, and also found it quite different than the MK1. It is a more civilised machine. As you say, there are pros and cons for each. Enjoy :-)

Glad to see there is another MK3 on the forum! Lovely car and colour! I sold my mk2.5 in December and bought a mk3. Love it to be honest.

Bought some eibach lowering springs with the intention of putting them in but ended up installing Meister CRDs. (Still have them if anyone wants them).

Car is much better looking and handles fantastic imo.

That looks stunning. I had same model, colour and spec previously. Really liked that car. Just got MK2 V Special. Miss the space and comfort a bit out of the MK3. Was great for long journeys. Best of luck with it.
