Postby heather » Mon, 07 Jul 2008 3:56 +0000

Hey Guys,
Was thinking about getting a tracking device fitted to my mx5 since the last one was stolen. There a bit pricey though, has anybody any thoughts??

i read somewhere of a crowd who track mobiles - ie, you leave a cheap ready to go mobile in your car on all the time and they track that. You'd perhaps leave it in the boot on a charger all the time.

I think i read somewhere though that you have to keep credit on the phone and use it for it to remain active. (long time since i had pay as you go - the joy of company phones)
You would also want it somewhere well hidden or the would just take it out.

A few weeks ago I was also looking into this and got this quote from:

see quote here:

I told him I wasn't interested at that price and he informed me that was the best he could do.

Interesting the Maplin tracker. There's a Maplin store just round the corner from where I work. I'll check out what they charge and maybe if we buy 10 or 20 we can get a discount.

Probably not, but if it was taken and held somewhere, this would assist in locating it, surely??

Hi Bunch,

I've just been into Maplin and got a price for this tracker.
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=99114&DOY=7m7

They do it for € 214.49
I am seriously thinking about getting it...
Was talking to the manager and they don't do group discounts.

Yep, you send a text message and it send it's location back.
Alternativlt there is a panic button which than send the GPS location to 3 mobiles.
You can put a contract sim or pay-as-you-go sim in.
Just need to keep it charged same as a phone, so it will only keep it's charge for 3 days or so. I'm sure you can bypass and come up with an alternative, longer lasting charge source.

Sounds interesting, but I have a question.
If it gets its location from GPS, then surely you would need it to be visable to the Skys, so hiding it away in your boot probably won't be any good, no?

I don't think that really matters. I have a satnav which I don't need to keep out the window to work. I'm just after spending a wholop with specsavers for new glasses so I won't get one yet.
