I see the current edition of Modern Classics has a 'drive off' between Japanese and German cars from the 90's:

Civic type r vs Audi S3
Lexus LS400 vs Merc S-Class
Mk2 MX5 vs BMW Z3
Toyota Supra vs Porsche 928


Interestingly, in every comparison the Japenses car won.
