Used a poker to find the rust no doubt, at least thats what they did to mine.
Mx5's are there to be enjoyed, hopefully you will enjoy some cutting and welding and get it back through the test

No the guy was reasonable enough, 2 of the areas I knew about but never got a xhance to tackly before test, i was surprised by the third but it was obvious enough, I bought a mig welder recently and going to tackle it myself, one of the sill will just a rough patch Job to get nct cert before I my insurance runs out and I take it off the road for the winter, don't really need rhe second car expense atm. I intend on doing a proper clean up over the winter again

The curse of the dreaded tin worm. Great that you have a welding machine and will tackle it yourself. I have tried to find welding night classes in the Midlands, but without luck. Would like to develop some skills in that area, as I'm sure it will come in handy in the future!

Hi all.
I resurrected my mk1 from the garage during the summer and began a recomissioning project.. '91 eunos 1.6. sitting almost 8 years.
Rebuilt the brakes all around, flushed coolant , and a few other bits..
Anyhow, presented it for NCT at the weekend and am still smiling...no nasty surprises and a few good ones..
I knew going in it wasn't going to pass ..tin worm/old tyres being the main ones I was aware of.
Suspension and brakes perfect, apart from ball joints and track rod ends..easy fix
Emissions almost non existent, but then I did notice that the tester put the probe in the wrong exhaust pipe..LOL..should I have said it to him??
Headlamp failure..my own fault as I inadvertently adjusted the setting when replacing lamps.
Then comes the visual defects...
Tin worm..of course
Wiper blade worn..easy
Fuel cap seal..tester couldn't figure out how to open the filler cap..
Passenger door not opening..tester unable to open lock.. you know, the one inside...?? I did it in a second, he was afraid to force it..which wouldn't have been the case
Windscreen washer not working..my fault, in the process of relocating it because of the turbo
All in all, not too bad but some cash is gonna have to be spent on the bodywork...anyone got any contacts who know their way around an mx5 that needs panels replaced??
John

PS Forgot to mention...The report also mentions airbags..or the lack thereof..suggesting that they're not obvious or else missing...how does one tackle that next time around??

Great fun, maybe for the next test you might get someone that actually knows what they're doing

Thats a great result!
Airbag :-) No, not applicable as they didn't come with them in '91
